Access to Clean Water

Providing access to clean water is a core element of our community development efforts and responsibility to the environment. In many of the places where we operate, it is also a material issue for these communities. To ensure proper alignment with needs, we work in close partnership with local communities and governments through engagement workshops with key stakeholders. TBS also holds educational workshops to help residents understand water conservation techniques, the importance of responsible water use, and the environmental impact of water scarcity. Utilizing local media, we also conduct public awareness campaigns through community events, social media, and work with local schools.

Occupational Health and Safety

At TBS, occupational health and safety is vital for our employees and a key part of our commitment to responsible practices. We believe all incidents are preventable, guiding our approach to managing safety concerns. Management follows international best practices, UN and ILO conventions, and Indonesian law, with internal codes to help employees understand their safety responsibilities.
TBS focuses on early identification of health and safety issues through surveys, audits, and feedback. We monitor health risks to prevent occupational diseases and create community health programs. TBS implements the OHSMS and MSMS according to national and international standards, certified by external parties, involving all staff and partners in product distribution.

We adhere to the following actions to ensure a robust implementation of our protocols:

  • Identification of potential workplace, environmental, or quality risks and mitigation mechanisms.
  • Full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Continuous improvement to enhance operational performance, quality of service or goods, as well as environmental and OHS performance.
  • Maintaining documented information and evaluating the effectiveness of the quality system, environment and OHS, and mining safety on a regular basis and adjusting to current conditions.
  • Fulfilling safety protocols for all mining operations, including facilities, infrastructure, installations, and equipment (Sistem Pengendalian Intern Pemerintah - SPIP).
  • To uphold the highest standards in health and safety management, three of our subsidiaries have implemented ISO 45001:2018 in their operations.

To uphold the highest standards in health and safety management, three of our subsidiaries have implemented ISO 45001:2018 in their operations.

TBS conducts an annual OHS evaluation to assess work safety and employee health. We aim to reduce injuries and eliminate fatalities. Safety must be part of our culture, understood by every employee, contractor, and supplier.

We have programs to minimize workplace hazards from noise, pollutants, and chemicals. Our OHS Forum encourages sharing safety information among all stakeholders.

Employees can access on-site clinics, first-aid facilities, and counseling services. TBS offers a health improvement program and ongoing training in health and wellness, including substance-abuse awareness and fitness classes.

Workforce Competency

While we work to diversify our business, and ensure a just transition for all of our employees, we are also continuing long-standing training and development programming. These help to maximize the potential of each employee today and attract the best talent the world has to offer. Programming includes standardized onboarding, operation-specific trainings, and ongoing learning opportunities. We also conduct regular performance evaluations to assess potential, upskill and address gaps, as well as identify future training needs. TBS also organizes specialized training for employees who are about to retire, helping them prepare for their retirement, either by starting their own business or by finding another job.

Improving Urban Mobility with EV Business

Indonesia’s reliance on petrol-fueled two-wheelers creates a major opportunity for electric mobility. TBS is developing affordable electric motorbikes and building the ecosystem needed to support them, from battery swapping to charging infrastructure. This shift not only lowers emissions but also reduces operational costs and improves everyday convenience.

EV adoption also plays a vital role in tackling urban challenges. Beyond cutting greenhouse gas emissions, electric mobility reduces air and noise pollution, eases congestion, and encourages investment in renewable energy to power the grid—helping shape more sustainable cities.

In parallel, TBS is transitioning its own fleet to EVs as part of our broader environmental commitment. By leading through action, we aim to accelerate cleaner mobility solutions that improve air quality and support a healthier, more sustainable future for Indonesia.

Affordable Clean Power

Providing continuous and affordable clean power presents a significant opportunity for TBS to fulfill its climate commitments. The shift from coal and other fossil fuels to renewable energy sources significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity generation. It promotes overall energy efficiency by reducing consumption and lowering carbon footprints. Clean energy also enables even greater electrification, making it possible to electrify transportation and heating sectors that are currently very reliant on fossil fuels.

By investing in renewable energy generation and expanding access to clean power solutions, TBS can contribute to a cleaner national grid and empower customers to make more sustainable choices. Individually, access can help decrease reliance on polluting fuels used for cooking, transportation, and heating. This leads to improved air quality, reduced incidence of respiratory issues, and an overall healthier environment for all. At a national level, access to clean energy sources also translates to energy security and geopolitical stability. All of this aligns with the growing demand for clean energy in Indonesia and positions TBS as a leader in the transition to a low-carbon future.

Local Communities

As part of the Indonesian Government’s efforts to ensure all business operations are ethical and beneficial to society, it is mandatory for corporations to initiate community development programs. Only a few go the extra mile to assess and enhance the impact of such initiatives. At TBS, we take a proactive approach to not only manage our resources, but also to align our programs with company’s values, balance expectations between various stakeholders, and avoid greenwashing claims. Through meticulous evaluations we have uncovered compelling evidence that our community development programs deliver tangible results that benefit both our organization and the communities we serve.

Take, for instance, our banana farming and cultivation program at one of the residents’ backyards in Jawa village, where ABN is hosted. As we fulfill our TBS2030 commitment of carbon neutrality in 2030, we must make sure that the transition is fair and inclusive. It must place people first and pay attention to the regions and communities to mitigate the risk of adverse economic consequences and social disruption, creating decent work opportunities and leaving no one behind. We adopt a localized community approach by engaging local stakeholders for capacity building and knowledge sharing. As Jawa village is identified as an agropolitan area, a region with a specific population developed to optimize its agricultural activities and commodities that promises real economic and socio-psychological empowerment for the communities, this initiative has involved 227 families and planted over 1,500 Cavendish banana trees.

Affordable Clean Power

At the foundation of our people practices is a fundamental respect for human rights, labor rights, and empowerment of everyone to reach their full potential. We uphold UN Global Compact and ILO conventions around workplace principles. These include strict adherence to human rights, preventing forced labor, and ensuring equitable treatment of all employees. This extends to those in our supply chain, contractors, and other external stakeholders as well. TBS also has an extensive Human and Labor Rights Policy that covers elements such as diversity and inclusion, non-discrimination, addressing forced or child labor, enabling free association, and creating an inspiring workplace. The Policy also lays out who is responsible for human rights within each business unit and subsidiary. Our security forces have received training in order to maintain operational security.

TBS holds zero-tolerance for forced or child labor, modern slavery, or human trafficking anywhere within our operations. We abide by all applicable local, national, and international laws or standards in these areas. To prevent any forms of unethical labor, we have strict hiring policies, conduct stringent background checks on personnel, and allow for the free movement of all staff outside of work hours.

We also recognize that an equally critical source of insights lies within our organization itself, that is our employees. Employees’ experiences on the ground reveal nuances that may otherwise remain hidden, paving the way for a healthy and ethical work environment. Our Whistleblower Protection Policy exists to encourage everyone to raise and discuss concern and protect anyone who does so in good faith. Speaking up helps us to identify and address misconduct, improve our systems of governance, risk management and internal controls, and to maintain the standards we set as a company.

Across all of our businesses, it is important that any changes to practices, policies, or operations are disseminated in a timely manner. TBS does not specify a minimum notification period related to operational changes in its company regulations or other management documents. As such, we have adopted internal practices to socialize any such changes as quickly as possible. In most instances, employees are notified of potential changes many months before they are implemented.
